The 2024 Language Educator Symposium, co-hosted by Educational Linguistics at Penn GSE, will address the future of language teaching and learning in the age of AI. From this future-orientated perspective, participants will hear from language learning experts who are incorporating generative AI in their teaching and from industry representatives who work as entrepreneurs and leaders in the field.

The symposium seeks to offer a range of expertise that will allow participants to identify how teaching with artificial intelligence fits into their own teaching philosophy and practices. In addition, the symposium will seek to address the following questions:

  • How can AI become relevant to the future professions of world language majors?
  • How do AI technologies account for language variety in the design process?
  • How do the affordances of AI technologies become educational (technology) affordances?
  • What future insights can be gained at the intersection of education, artificial intelligence, and industry?
  • What are the short-and-long-term AI-related skills that world language educators must develop?

Notable speakers include:

  • Abraham López Lee, Co-founder, Correcto
  • Lilach Mollick, Co-Director, Generative AI Lab, Wharton AI & Analytics Initiative
  • Feng Xiao, Associate Professor, Pomona College
