Generative AI and Foreign Language Instruction: Exploring Pedagogical Opportunities

While the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in education is not new, recent developments in generative AI have sparked new questions about the pedagogical implications of AI technologies for foreign language classrooms. This workshop presents emergent research into how educators are integrating AI into their classrooms and offers a design heuristic that can support educators in designing assignments that integrate AI in thoughtful, considered ways. Participants will learn about rhetorical, assistive, creative, and critical uses of AI in classrooms and explore examples of each in collaborative groups. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to share their own teaching practices and discuss potential concerns and challenges while developing practical ideas for ways to address AI in their classrooms.
