Technology Workshop: Movie Projects and Movie Editing
In this workshop, Eleni Miltsakaki, Ph.D. will talk about the different types of video genres that can be used for language classroom projects and review a variety of specific video projects that can be assigned to students. In the hands-on part of the workshop, participants will learn how to edit and produce videos using iMovie (Mac) or Movie Maker (Windows). Specifically, they will learn how to download YouTube videos, import video clips, photographs, and sound files to our projects, add title slides, annotate clips with subtitles, add sound, add Powerpoint slides, record a narration, animate photographs, save, publish, and share our videos. Time permitting, participants will share their video projects at the end of the workshop.

About Eleni Miltsakaki, Ph.D.:
Eleni Miltsakaki holds an MA degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Essex, England and a PhD in Computational Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. At the age of, 24 Eleni Miltsakaki became the director of studies at a  foreign language school in Athens with the challenge of redesigning the school’s foreign language curriculum and training teachers to engage adult learners attending evening courses. Under her leadership, the school reached the peak of its popularity and the highest percentage of students obtaining language proficiency certificates in English, French, and Italian. In the US, Eleni Miltsakaki focused on developing automated models for analyzing coherence in student essays and, more recently, she founded Choosito! search and learn, an online content curation tool, specifically designed for education, that uses linguistic analysis to characterize the reading level and the thematic content of websites in real time searches. Since 2006, Dr. Miltsakaki has been teaching educational technology courses at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania.  In collaboration with Christina Frei and the Penn Language Center, she is, currently, focusing on building innovative technology to support theme-based teaching of World Languages.
