Tomoko was born in Japan, came to study in graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, and, upon graduation, stayed at Penn to teach Japanese. She began teaching Japanese in 1996 and has taught various courses at the beginning and advanced levels of Japanese, including Japanese for the Professions. Tomoko distinguished herself as one of the leaders in the field of business Japanese instruction and has authored numerous publications on the topic. She is the recipient of the Teacher Award from the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (2019).
