Teaching modern Turkish Language & Culture and Ottoman Turkish courses at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Hatiboglu spent early part of her life in Istanbul. She has full Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test Certifications for Turkish from American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. She has Foreign Language Certificate in Instructional Technologies & Online teaching from Penn Language Center. Dr. Hatiboglu has organized and participated national and international conferences, and academic committees and represented AATT and her departments (Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and Penn Language Center) at the University of Pennsylvania in many events throughout her terms in the institutions she has been serving. Dr. Hatiboglu has received many grants and developed Turkish teaching material for online and in person Turkish language courses. She is currently teaching Elementary, Intermediate and Advance level Turkish and Ottoman Turkish courses at the University of Pennsylvania. Feride’s favorite sports are tennis, fencing and skiing and chess is her favorite game. She also loves to cook for her family and students.

Courses Taught
  • TURK – 021 ELEMENTARY TURKISH I:  This is a course for beginners who have no previous knowledge of Turkish. Using a communicative approach, Elementary Turkish introduces basic vocabulary and grammar rules and focuses on building language competencies in listening, reading, speaking and writing. By the end of the course, students will be able to participate in simple conversations, know daily expressions, and will understand simple dialogues in day-to-day context. Students will also develop writing strategies that will allow them to write simple letters and fill in commonly-used forms.
  • TURK – 023 INTERMEDIATE TURKISH I: This is a course for students who have previous knowledge of Turkish or students who have completed “TURK-021, TURK-022 Elementary Turkish I and II”. Intermediate Turkish improves already existing basic Turkish knowledge with role plays, vocabulary exercises reviewing grammar rules and focuses on language competencies in listening, reading, speaking and writing. By the end of the course, students will be able to create simple conversations, ask and answer simple questions on familiar topics, and handle simple situations or transactions. Students will also develop writing strategies to handle simple letters and write short stories.
  • TURK – 027 ADVANCE TURKISH AND TURKISH MOVIES AND  IN SPEAKING AND WRITING:  This course offers students the opportunity to improve significantly written and spoken discourse strategies and raise language competence to an academic register. Students work across literary genres and media as they interpret and analyze cultural, political and historical moments in Turkish movies. Special attention will be given to the development of an academic discourse style during in-class discussions, threaded discussions and, written compositions. There will be movie nights once a month and course concludes with an in-class presentation of the collaborative creative project and the final paper.
