Social Media has become elemental in the communication of today's society. Typically thought of as an interruption in the classroom, this month's edition of IGI Global's Online Symposium Series will discuss a different approach to social media. On Thursday, April 4 at 2:00 EST, featured speaker Professor Edward Dixon of the University of Pennsylvania will outline and explore different uses and approaches to social media, specifically how to use it as a tool in conjunction with teaching online language courses. This presentation is based on Professor Dixon's recent article in the International Journal of Virtual and Personal Learning Environments (IJVPLE), entitled “Building a Model for Online Distance Courses Through Social Media and Networks.”

This presentation will discuss applications and strategies for evaluating social media in an educational context, as well as teaching in an online environment with distinct and separate learning spaces. Professor Dixon will introduce new possibilities for language learning through emerging technologies, referencing his recent experience in teaching an online German language course.
