Authentic Texts, Parts One and Two. (Part 1: Guiding Learners to Interpret Authentic Texts, Part 2: Leading a Text-Based Discussion)

In this workshop, we will dive into the use of authentic texts, i.e. texts that have not been modified for language learners. This research-informed teaching practice will address the reading portion of a two-part approach to reading and writing practices, by further developing literacy support for students as well as practices for facilitating interaction among students in a classroom setting. Accordingly, this practice can also expand the definition of “text” to include the reading of authentic websites, etc. to address the broader literacy needs of students in the Framework for 21st Century Learning (P21) Standards. Participants will learn about strategies for selecting texts as well as strategies for guiding students through a reading task and discussion. An overall objective for the workshop is for participants to learn about strategies for selecting texts as well as strategies for guiding and discussing students through a reading task. The considered use of technology is woven throughout this workshop and participants will find new ways to incorporate technology in student-centered ways. In the end, participants will benefit from both lesson plan handouts and rubrics to self-assess the design of their lessons. Click here to register.
